Day Five – Picking up Stakes

June 25, 2016 - Movin’ On
It’s our last morning in Millinocket and we make one last visit to the Appalachian Trail Café for breakfast and to the Moose Drop In by Two Broke Moms.  Marilyn has more shopping to do and we have to find out how the drag show went!

Trish is such a hoot!  She shows us one of the dollar bills that she folded into a heart shape to give to all the performers!

Onward to Brunswick for the next few days.  We’re looking forward to the full breakfast that comes with our room at the Comfort Inn!

Maine is the pine tree state;  they mean these tall, rather unusually shaped trees!
We get settled in and head down to Freeport for dinner at Harraseekett Lunch and Lobster, which had been recommended to us.  It’s one of those great, outdoor places where you place your order and watch the boats until your number is called.  Mostly they have “baskets” with breaded seafood, French fries and coleslaw;  but as a consolation for us GF folks they have a GF lobster salad and GF chowder.  I’m still gun shy around chowder, so I get the lobster salad which is big chunks of lobster on some lettuce with four little tomato quarters.  Marilyn gets the shrimp basket.

We are sharing our table with a couple from Pennsylvania and they are an inspiration!  Blanche and Harrold are 86 and 88 respectively and look and act like people at least twenty years younger.  They have traveled the world and tell us that they come up to Maine every year for the lobsters.  They goal is to have one each every day that they’re here!  And they graciously give us lessons in how to disassemble the crustacean and extract every bit of meat.

Not our steamer clams;  but we learned how to eat them, if we ever lose our minds!

Our conversation goes well beyond the normal travelers’ lines – where are you from;  what have you seen;  where are you going.  We even venture into politics with everyone being very circumspect until we figure out we’re kindred spirits!

After dinner we investigate L.L.Bean because we’ve been told it’s not to be missed.  You’d think it would be just one big store;  but you’d be wrong!  There’s the home store and the outdoor store and the boat store and somewhere close by there’s an outlet store!  We wander around in a couple of them and are suitably impressed.  Marilyn is more impressed by the Ben & Jerry’s next door!  She gets a chocolate-peanut butter confection and I really wish I could join her!

Back up to Brunswick and we agree to look for a news program to catch up with the world!  We knew about Brexit and the sit-in but not about the flooding in West Virginia and it makes us wonder what else we’ve missed!  It’s nice to have a real hotel room.  The cabin was fun;  but this is grand.

And for those who demand proof that I'm really away...
